Break it Down by Lydia Davis

breakit downA nice little collection of short stories, her first, by the author who won the Man Booker International Prize in 2013. Published in 1986 this was where Davis started to make her reputation as the master of the telling detail and the “high-priestess of the startling” – though there is, to be honest, little evidence in this collection of anything great. There are one or two stories which capture the reader’s imagination, but the proliferation of shorter pieces uniformly fail to impress, none of them really amounting to much more than a brief distraction and a kind of taste of something or other.
