Is this the greatest novel ever written? The best novel of the twentieth century? If so, why? Why indeed? Is it because of the way it recreates a character in Mrs Dalloway with such deft strokes and subtle shades of meaning? Is it because of the manner in which it entwines the reader’s empathy with some boring old woman who doesn’t do much, or amount to much? Is it because so many of the novel’s sentences are a thing of beauty in themselves? Indeed, Woolf’s control of figurative language is a master class in all aspects of prose style. A wonderful novel.
