The Moustache by Emmanuel Carrere

The Moustache by Emmanuel Carrere

So here is Carrere in all his glory. What a mind bender of a novel. The plot of the novel is as stupid as it sounds: the protagonist shaves off his moustache but no one realises. That’s it, at least to begin with. But this little niggle starts such a disastrous collapse in the protagonist’s sense of self, and his confidence in his grasp of the external world, that the story becomes compulsive reading. And as the protagonist spirals into the darkest of places mentally, the reader is dragged with him, making us think about how fragile our place in the world is. An amazing novel.
