The Days of Abandonment by Elena Ferrante

The Days of Abandonment by Elena Ferrante

Elena Ferrante is the author of “several remarkable, lucid, austerely honest novels, the most celebrated of which is “The Days of Abandonment,” published in Italy in 2002.” The novel describes what happens in the life and in the mind of a woman in her late thirties when her husband suddenly announces that he is leaving her. the narrator’s descent into madness is very well handled, the author using rather mundane aspects of day to day life – such as taking the dog for a walk or getting a new lock fitted on the front door – to explore the mental breakdown of a person’s life, where everything is suddenly something else.
