Deception by Philip Roth

Deception by Philip Roth

A really short novel which presents the reader with a series of dialogues between a man, named Philip and who is ostensibly the author himself, or rather, a fictionalised version of him, and a woman in an unhappy marriage, one which she can’t leave for whatever reason. What’s interesting about this novel is how it works without any narration to speak of; the little conversations and shred intimacies of the lovers make up the whole of the work, making it a novel experience for the reader, but first and foremost, like most of Roth’s novels, it works.
